Antiphona ad Magnificat (II Vesperis)
Presentation of BVM - II Vespers Magnificat
About This Prayer
This antiphon contemplates Mary's childhood consecration: 'Hodie beata Virgo Maria in templo praesentatur' (this day the blessed Virgin Mary is presented in the temple). Though not recorded in Scripture, the tradition of Mary's presentation derives from the Protoevangelium of James (2nd century). The purpose clause 'ut a Spiritu Sancto praeparata, habitaculum Filii Dei fieret' (that, prepared by the Holy Spirit, she might become the dwelling-place of the Son of God) establishes the theological meaning: Mary's temple service prepared her to become the living temple. At Second Vespers, this antiphon completes the feast's meditation on Mary's preparation for the Incarnation.
