About This Prayer
This responsory for the Third Sunday of Lent draws from Deuteronomy 6:3-4: 'Hear, O Israel, the precepts of the Lord, and write them in thy heart as in a book, and I will give thee a land flowing with milk and honey.' The Shema Israel, the fundamental Jewish confession of faith, is here connected to the Promised Land. Lenten discipline prepares the heart to receive God's word.
