Capitulum
Common of One Martyr - Lauds Chapter from James 1:12
About This Prayer
James 1:12 provides this capitulum in fuller form than Terce's version. The 'corona vitae' (crown of life) appears also in Apocalypse 2:10's promise to Smyrna's martyrs. The verb 'repromisit' (hath promised) uses the intensive prefix 're-' indicating a solemn, formal promise. 'Diligentibus se' (to them that love him) specifies the condition - the crown is promised not merely to sufferers but to lovers of God who suffer because they love. At Lauds, beginning the day, this reading frames all subsequent labor and potential suffering as the path to the promised crown.
