DIVINUM OFFICIUM Antiphon

Antiphona 2

Common of Confessors - Vespers Antiphon 2

About This Prayer

Matthew 24:46 provides this antiphon from Christ's discourse on vigilance. The 'servus' (servant) holds a position of trust - the 'oikonomos' or steward managing the master's household. The participle 'sic facientem' (so doing) indicates faithful execution of duty when unsupervised. The temporal clause 'cum venerit dominus eius' (when his lord shall come) points to both death and the Parousia - the master's return is certain, only the timing unknown. At Vespers, as the workday ends, this antiphon promises blessedness to confessors found faithfully working at Christ's return, whether personal or universal.
