Responsorium Breve
Common of Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Sext Brief Responsory
About This Prayer
Psalm 45:6 (Vulgate: 45:5) provides the responsory proper: 'Adiuvabit eam Deus vultu suo' (God shall help her with his countenance). The 'vultus Dei' (face/countenance of God) signifies favor and presence (Numbers 6:25). The versicle 'Deus in medio eius, non commovebitur' (God in her midst, she shall not be moved) applies the psalm's description of Zion to Mary - she is the true Holy City, immovable because God dwells within her. At Sext, the hour of crucifixion, this responsory recalls that even at Calvary Mary stood firm (John 19:25), upheld by God's presence within.
