Responsorium Breve
Common of Apostles - Sext Brief Responsory
About This Prayer
Psalm 44:17-18 (Vulgate) originally addressed Israel's king: 'Constitues eos principes super omnem terram' (Thou shalt make them princes over all the earth). The Church applies this messianic psalm to Christ and His Apostles, whom He appointed as rulers over the universal Church. 'Memores erunt nominis tui' (they shall be mindful of thy name) refers to the Apostles' preservation of Christ's Name through preaching and the sacraments. At Sext, the hour of crucifixion, this text proclaims that from the Cross Christ established His princes who would govern His kingdom until His return.
