DIVINUM OFFICIUM Antiphon

Antiphona 3

Common of Apostles - Lauds Antiphon 3

About This Prayer

This fuller citation of Psalm 18:5 adds 'et in fines orbis terrae verba eorum' (and their words unto the ends of the world). The parallel structure - 'sonus' (sound) reaching 'omnem terram' (all the earth), 'verba' (words) reaching 'fines orbis' (the world's ends) - emphasizes both the audibility of the Gospel proclamation and its verbal content. The Apostles did not merely make noise but spoke intelligible doctrine. At Lauds, this antiphon summons the Church to continue the Apostles' work: making the Gospel both heard and understood to earth's remotest boundaries.
