Antiphona 2
Christ the King - Lauds
About This Prayer
From Psalm 144:13, this antiphon describes Christ's kingdom: 'Regnum tuum, regnum omnium saeculorum' (thy kingdom is a kingdom of all ages). Unlike earthly kingdoms that rise and fall, Christ's reign 'in omni generatione et generationem' (throughout all generations) admits no succession. The paired terms 'regnum' and 'dominatio' distinguish sovereignty (supreme authority) from active governance: Christ both holds title and exercises rule. Pius XI instituted this feast (1925) precisely to counter the secularist claim that religion is a private matter: Christ's kingship is public, political, and eternal.
