Feria IV Cinerum - Ash Wednesday Lauds

This fourth Lauds antiphon for Ash Wednesday continues the theme of Joel 2:13: 'Let us change our garments for ashes and sackcloth; let us fast and weep before the Lord, for our God is plenteous in mercy to forgive sins.' The external signs of penance - ashes, sackcloth, fasting, tears - express interior contrition. The antiphon grounds penitential practice in confidence of divine mercy.
