ORATIO PATRIS PRO FAMILIA

A Father's Prayer for His Family

About This Prayer

This prayer for fathers draws on Ephesians 3:14-15, 'from whom all fatherhood in heaven and on earth is named,' to commend one's family to God. Catholic tradition emphasizes the father as spiritual head of the household with responsibility for leading family prayers and forming children in faith. The prayer asks for wisdom, patience, and strength to lead a family in the way of salvation.

Prayer Text

LATINE
Protege eos ab omni malo, a laqueis inimici,
Fac me, Domine, verum patrem secundum cor tuum:
firmum in auctoritate, mitem in correctione,
fidelem in providendo, et constantem in oratione.
Per Iesum Christum Dominum nostrum,
qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus,
per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.
ENGLISH
O God, from Whom all fatherhood in heaven and on earth is named:
I commend to Thee my family, which Thou hast entrusted to my care.
Give me wisdom to govern them justly,
patience to bear their faults,
and strength to lead them in the way of salvation.
Protect them from all evil, from the snares of the enemy,
and from the corruptions of this world.
May Thy holy angels guard them by day and by night.
Grant that we may all be united in Thy love,
that our home may be a house of prayer,
and that after the trials of this life we may be reunited in Thy heavenly kingdom.
Make me, O Lord, a true father after Thy own heart:
firm in authority, gentle in correction,
faithful in providing, and constant in prayer.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one God,
world without end. Amen.
