Ignatian Examen - Thanksgiving

The first step of the Ignatian Examen places oneself in God's presence and gives thanks for blessings received. St. Ignatius considered ingratitude 'the cause of all sins and evils.' The daily Examen was the one prayer he insisted his Jesuits never omit, even when other prayers had to be shortened. Gratitude disposes the soul to receive further graces.

Recolo cum gratitudine dona quae hodie recepi:
existentiam meam, creationem meam, redemptionem meam, vocationem ad Fidem.
Considero quomodo Deus laboraverit et operatus sit pro me
in omnibus creaturis super faciem terrae.
Deus meus, gratias tibi ago pro omnibus beneficiis
quae unquam a te recepi, et praesertim hac die.
Gratias tibi ago quod me creasti,
quod me per Filium tuum redemisti,
quod me filium Ecclesiae tuae fecisti,
et quod me hac die conservasti.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper,
et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

I place myself in the presence of God.
I recall with gratitude the gifts I have received this day:
my existence, my creation, my redemption, my vocation to the Faith.
I consider how God has laboured and wrought for me
in all creatures upon the face of the earth.
O my God, I thank Thee for all the benefits
which I have ever received from Thee, and particularly this day.
I thank Thee for having created me,
for having redeemed me by Thy Son,
for having made me a child of Thy Church,
and for having preserved me during this day.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
