The Confiteor

About This Prayer

The Confiteor is the general confession of sins recited at the beginning of Mass and before receiving absolution. The triple 'mea culpa' with the striking of the breast expresses the depth of contrition and personal responsibility for sin.

Confiteor est generalis confessio peccatorum quae in initio Missae et ante absolutionem recipiendam recitatur.

beatae Mariae semper Virgini,
beato Michaeli Archangelo,
beato Ioanni Baptistae,
sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo,
omnibus Sanctis, et tibi, Pater,
quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo, et opere:
(Pectus ter percutitur:)
mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem,
beatum Michaelem Archangelum,
beatum Ioannem Baptistam,
sanctos Apostolos Petrum et Paulum,
omnes Sanctos, et te, Pater,
orare pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.
Misereatur mei omnipotens Deus,
et dimissis peccatis meis, perducat me ad vitam aeternam. Amen.
Indulgentiam, absolutionem, et remissionem peccatorum meorum
tribuat mihi omnipotens et misericors Dominus. Amen.

I confess to Almighty God,
to blessed Mary ever Virgin,

to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul,
to all the Saints, and to you, Father,
that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed:

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.
Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever Virgin,
blessed Michael the Archangel,
blessed John the Baptist,
the holy Apostles Peter and Paul,
all the Saints, and you, Father,
to pray to the Lord our God for me.
May the almighty God have mercy on me,
and forgive me my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.
May the almighty and merciful Lord grant me pardon, absolution,
and remission of all my sins. Amen.

The 1962 Confiteor includes the full enumeration of saints. The striking of the breast (derived from Lk 18:13) is a traditional gesture of contrition.
