About This Prayer

Haec est collecta principalis pro fidelibus defunctis, Deum rogans ut peccata omnium defunctorum remittat et eis indulgentiam concedat.

COLLECTA PRIMA
Deus, fidelium Omnium Creator et Redemptor,
animabus famulorum famularumque tuarum
remissionem cunctorum tribue peccatorum;
ut indulgentiam, quam semper optaverunt,
piis supplicationibus consequantur.
Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
COLLECTA SECVNDA
Deus, cui proprium est misereri semper et parcere,
te supplices exoramus pro anima famuli tui,
quam hodie de hoc saeculo migrare iussisti,
ut non tradas eam in manus inimici,
neque obliviscaris in finem,
sed iubeas eam a sanctis Angelis suscipi,
et ad patriam paradisi perduci;
ut, quia in te speravit et credidit,
non poenas inferni sustineat,
sed gaudia aeterna possideat.
Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
ENGLISH
FIRST COLLECT
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful,
grant to the souls of Thy servants departed
the remission of all their sins;
that through pious supplications
they may obtain the pardon which they have always desired.
Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.
SECOND COLLECT
O God, whose property is always to have mercy and to spare,
we humbly beseech Thee on behalf of the soul of Thy servant,
whom Thou hast commanded to go forth from this world,
that Thou wouldst not deliver him into the hands of the enemy,
nor forget him forever,
but command that he be taken up by the holy Angels,
and brought home to paradise;
that having put his hope and trust in Thee,
he may not suffer the pains of hell,
but may possess everlasting joys.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONTEXT
The phrase 'the hands of the enemy' refers to the devil, who seeks to claim souls at the moment of death.
