VENI SANCTE SPIRITVS
Come, Holy Spirit
About This Prayer
The Veni Sancte Spiritus is the Golden Sequence of Pentecost, one of only four sequences retained in the 1570 Missal. Attributed to Stephen Langton or Pope Innocent III. The sequence invokes the Holy Spirit under multiple titles: Father of the poor, Giver of gifts, Light of hearts, best Consoler.
Prayer Text
LATINE
Veni, Sancte Spiritus, et emitte caelitus lucis tuae radium.
Veni, pater pauperum, veni, dator munerum, veni, lumen cordium.
Consolator optime, dulcis hospes animae, dulce refrigerium.
In labore requies, in aestu temperies, in fletu solatium.
O lux beatissima, reple cordis intima tuorum fidelium.
Amen. Alleluia.
ENGLISH
Come, Holy Spirit, send forth the heavenly radiance of Thy light.
Come, Father of the poor, come, Giver of gifts, come, Light of hearts.
Best Consoler, sweet Guest of the soul, sweet Refreshment.
In labor, rest; in heat, temperance; in tears, solace.
O most blessed Light, fill the inmost heart of Thy faithful.
Without Thy grace, there is nothing in man, nothing that is not harmful.
Cleanse what is sordid, moisten what is arid, heal what is hurt.
Bend what is rigid, fire what is frigid, correct what goes astray.
Grant to Thy faithful, those who trust in Thee, the sevenfold gifts.
Grant the reward of virtue, grant the deliverance of salvation, grant eternal joy.
Amen. Alleluia.
