Responsorium III - Nocturn I
Third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete), Nocturn I, Responsory 3
About This Prayer
"Descendet Dominus sicut pluvia in vellus" (The Lord shall descend like rain upon fleece) alludes to Gideon's fleece (Judges 6:37-38), a traditional type of the Virgin Birth. As dew fell silently on the fleece while the ground remained dry, so Christ entered Mary's womb without disturbing her virginity. The responsory promises justice and abundant peace in the Messiah's reign (Psalm 71:6-7).
