Lent Ember Days - Wed

This Benedictus antiphon for Lenten Ember Wednesday draws from Matthew 12:39: 'A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.' The Ember Days are ancient quarterly fasts for the ordination of clergy. Christ's reference to Jonah prefigures His own three days in the tomb, making this text particularly apt for the Lenten fast.
