DIVINUM OFFICIUM Antiphon

Antiphona 1

Common of Virgin Martyrs - Vespers Antiphon 1

About This Prayer

This antiphon references Matthew 25:1-13's parable of the wise and foolish virgins. The 'virgo sapiens' (wise virgin) kept her lamp filled with oil - patristically interpreted as good works, prayer, or the Holy Spirit. The participle 'vigilantem' (watching/keeping vigil) connects to Christ's repeated command to 'watch' (Matthew 24:42, 25:13, 26:41). At Vespers, as evening darkness falls and lamps are lit, this antiphon frames the entire Office as vigilant preparation for the Bridegroom's coming, whether in death or at the Parousia.
