James 1:12 provides this capitulum, using 'tentationem' to mean both temptation and trial - the Greek 'peirasmon' encompasses both senses. The 'corona vitae' (crown of life) also appears in Apocalypse 2:10 where Christ promises it to the church at Smyrna facing martyrdom. The passive 'probatus fuerit' (shall have been proved) echoes the metallurgical imagery of 1 Peter 1:7 - faith tested by fire like gold. At Terce (9 AM), the hour when the Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost, this reading recalls that the same Spirit who gave the apostles boldness empowers martyrs to endure their trial.
