Responsorium Breve
Common of One Martyr - Sext Brief Responsory
About This Prayer
Psalm 91:14 (Vulgate) provides this responsory's text. The 'domus Domini' (house of the Lord) is the Temple, extended to mean the Church and heaven itself. 'Plantatus' (planted) continues the agricultural imagery - the martyr did not plant himself but was planted by God (Matthew 15:13). The versicle 'Ad annuntiandum mane misericordiam tuam' (To proclaim thy mercy in the morning) links to Lauds theology - the martyr's death proclaims God's mercy. At Sext, the crucifixion hour, this responsory shows the martyr permanently rooted in God's presence, able to testify forever.
