DIVINUM OFFICIUM Antiphon

Antiphona 4

Common of Confessors - Lauds Antiphon 4

About This Prayer

Proverbs 10:6-7 provides the language of this antiphon on righteous abundance. 'In abundantia erit iustorum' (abundance shall belong to the righteous) promises material and spiritual prosperity to the just - not prosperity gospel but covenant blessing. The 'nomen in benedictione' (name in blessing) means his name will be used in blessings, as 'May you be like N.' - his very name becomes a blessing formula. At Lauds, beginning a new day's work, this antiphon promises that faithful labor leads to abundance and lasting reputation - the confessor's name remains blessed centuries after death.
