Invitatorium
Common of Apostles - Matins Invitatory
About This Prayer
The title 'Regem Apostolorum' (King of Apostles) establishes Christ's unique authority over the Twelve from the opening of the night Office. Unlike earthly kings who inherit or seize power, Christ's kingship derives from the Father's eternal decree (Psalm 2:6-7). The invitatory summons the Church to worship Him specifically as sovereign over those He sent (Greek: apostolos = 'one sent'), reminding us that apostolic authority is delegated, not autonomous. To adore Christ as King of Apostles is to acknowledge that all legitimate Church authority flows from Him alone.
