DIVINUM OFFICIUM Antiphon

Antiphona 5

Common of Apostles - Lauds Antiphon 5

About This Prayer

'Faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum' (Matthew 4:19) records Christ's call to Peter and Andrew at the Sea of Galilee. The future tense 'faciam' (I will make) indicates transformation: they were fishermen; Christ will remake them into something they could not become themselves. 'Piscatores hominum' (fishers of men) borrows their trade vocabulary but radically redefines it - instead of taking life from the sea, they will rescue souls from the depths of sin and death. At Lauds, beginning the day's work, this antiphon invites the baptized to join the Apostles' catch.
