All Saints - Lauds - Sap. 5:16-17
About This Prayer
The chapter reading from Wisdom 5:16-17 establishes the eschatological reward: 'Justi in perpetuum vivent' (the just shall live forever). Against Epicurean denial of afterlife and Sadducean agnosticism, this text affirms immortality with specificity: their reward is 'apud Dominum' (with the Lord), and the care of them is 'apud Altissimum' (with the Most High). The promise of 'regnum decoris et diadema speciei' (kingdom of glory and crown of beauty) employs royal imagery for those who renounced earthly kingdoms. The chapter functions at Lauds as scriptural proclamation: after the psalms of praise, the Word speaks directly. The response 'Deo gratias' expresses the Church's reception of divine promise - gratitude precedes petition.
